 San Francisco-based artist Whitney Lynn was selected from among 20 applicants to live and work in downtown Las Vegas during the month of June. Her interest in and past work with vernacular art forms—everything from signage to street performance to fishing lures—made the Neon Museum’s residency opportunity appealing. For her residency project, she created a series of large-scale neon gouache drawings, Girls, Girls, Girls, based off paintings of Biblical temptresses, and a series of drawings that explored perspective in relation to visual perception. A Matter of Perspective neon work was gifted to the Neon Museum, starting its contemporary art collection.

Whitney Lynn creates objects, performances, videos and photo-based works to reframe narratives of familiar objects, images and events. Mining cultural and political histories, her work examines mechanisms of illusion, concepts of value, militarized landscapes and collapsed boundaries. Lynn received a BFA in Sculpture + Extended Media from Virginia Commonwealth University and an MFA in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute.  She has held faculty appointments at Stanford University, UC Berkeley, and SFAI, and is currently an Assistant Professor in Interdisciplinary Visual Arts at the University of Washington.
